UN cutting costs by the word (AP)

Files and documents pile up at an office of the UN at the Palais des Nations in Geneva Switzerland Thursday Aug. 11, 2011. Even words aren't cheap anymore. The United Nations is putting a word limit on reports because of the costs of reproducing and translating them. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the U.N.'s director-general in Geneva, told the Conference on Disarmament on Thursday that the new word limit is 'due to increasing financial constraints and the strain on translation services.' He told nuclear arms negotiators to limit their reports to no more than 10,700 words, while reports from the U.N.'s own secretariat are limited to 8,500 words. Tokayev, who also heads the conference and was foreign minister of Kazakhstan, said the U.N. is asking all nations to comply. (AP Photo/John Heilprin)AP - Even words aren't cheap anymore. The United Nations, not normally known for terseness, is putting a word limit on the thousands of reports it produces each year to try to save money and diplomats' time.
